Region
The Tatras
The range
Poland's only high mountains, granite and limestone peaks on the Slovak border, all inside a national park. Paths are well marked and busy in August, quiet in June and September.
Zakopane
The town at the foot of the range has its own building style, steep wooden roofs and carved gables, invented here in the late 19th century.
When to go
June to early October for walking. Snow can stay on the high passes until late June, and afternoon storms are common in midsummer, which is one reason our walks start early.

Tatra valleys from a timber lodge
From the Baltic to Poland's only alpine range: six nights in a wooden lodge at Zakopane. The lodge keeps a small gaming room by the bar; the mountain mornings start early.
