Region
The Scottish Highlands
The country
North of the line from Glasgow to Stirling the land lifts into mountains, lochs and long glens with very few people in them. Castles are everywhere, from ruins to houses still lived in.
Getting about
Distances are not great but roads are slow, so we travel by small coach with a driver who knows the single-track lanes.
When to go
May and June have the longest days; August brings heather and midges; September is often the driest month of all.

Highland castles from Edinburgh
Our one trip abroad by coach: three nights in a castle hotel and a loop through the Highlands. The last two nights are in Edinburgh, in a hotel that has a gaming floor below the lobby.
