Amsterdam's canals, the Zaan river and the shallow Markermeer make this one of the few places where boats are the obvious way to travel.

Villages

Marken was an island until a dyke joined it to the mainland in 1957. Edam and Volendam face it across the water.

When to go

April for the bulb fields, May and September for bikes and boats without the summer crowds.
