Amsterdam and the Zaan by water

Canals by small boat, windmills on the Zaan and a dyke ride to Marken.

Amsterdam's ring of canals was dug in the 17th century and is best seen from water level. North of the city, the Zaan river is lined with working windmills and wooden houses painted green.

You stay four nights in a canal house hotel in the Jordaan and spend each morning on the water or on a bike.
